Welcome to the DECODE Neuromarketing Introduction. I'm Dr. Chris Scheier, and in this first part, we'll explore the most fundamental insight from behavioral science that changes everything about how we think about marketing. The brain has two modes of processing. Daniel Kahneman called them System 1 and System 2. System 1 is fast, automatic, and effortless. It's the system that drives 95% of our decisions — including most purchase decisions. When you reach for a brand in the supermarket, System 1 is doing the heavy lifting. It operates on associations, emotions, and learned patterns. System 2 is slow, deliberate, and effortful. It's the system we use for complex calculations, careful comparisons, and rational analysis. Most traditional market research asks consumers to use System 2 — to think carefully about why they chose a brand. But that's not how the decision actually happened. This is the central tension in marketing: we measure with System 2 what was decided by System 1. The DECODE approach bridges this gap by measuring implicit associations — the System 1 patterns that actually drive behavior. In the next part, we'll look at what this means for brand building — and why brands are essentially networks of associations stored in long-term memory.
